Cierra Aguilera is completing her General Studies degree at the South and Central campuses.
Cierra’s journey through college is a testament to perseverance and the importance of support along the way. She reflects on her favorite course, Introduction to Humanities with Professor Bounds at the South campus, as a highlight of her academic experience.
“A lesson I’ve learned is that anyone can get through college,” says Aguilera, “I started when I was 21 and was so scared of what I couldn’t do, but there were so many people and professors at San Jac that helped me get through it.”
Her plans are equally inspiring. After graduating this fall, Aguilera will transfer to the University of Houston to pursue a degree in English with a minor in Education. She aims to channel her love of learning into teaching and wants to become a high school English teacher.
Cierra credits much of her success to the encouragement of her professors, particularly Professor Bounds, who taught her Composition I, and Dr. Joy, her education professor.
“They helped me realize that I am much better at things than I let myself believe,” Aguilera shares. “Their support, along with that of my friends and family, helped me get here.”
As someone who has grown to love learning, Aguilera offers this advice to current and future students: “Go at your own pace. You don’t have to rush through college. Do it at a pace you can handle so you don’t burn yourself out. You might come to find you love learning, like I did!”
