Today, April 8, 2024 Texas will experience a total solar eclipse. A solar eclipse is when the moon passes between the earth and the sun to cast a shadow or block the sun. This year’s solar eclipse is significant because it is the first solar eclipse to pass through North America in 7 years, and some areas will experience at least 4 minutes of complete darkness. The next solar eclipse is not due to happen again until the year 2044. Here is a short guide to all you need to know.
In preparing for the solar eclipse it is important to follow theses steps.
- The solar eclipse will happen between 12:20 p.m. to 3:01 p.m. CST.
- You can download the solar eclipse timer application to prepare for the exact time you will see the solar eclipse from where you are standing. The link is here.
- Wear your solar eclipse glasses. Solar eclipse glasses are needed and can be found at your local grocery store or Wal-Mart. It is never okay to look directly at the sun.
- Know the weather. Some areas will not be able to view the solar eclipse due to storm clouds, thunderstorms, or rain.
- Do not stop on roads or highways to view the solar eclipse.
- Find a safe, designated space to view the solar eclipse.
- It is reported that a partial eclipse will start around 12:15 p.m. Monday for Central Texas, with totality happening a little after 1:30 p.m. Exact times will vary depending on your location.
