San Jac has made significant strides in supporting Spanish language learners through its Conversations and Tutoring en Español program, which began in the Fall of 2025. This initiative was born from a collaboration between the South Campus Spanish professors: Yesica Amaya, Ana Perez Alfajarrin, and Annette Zapata. From Apr. 11 all the way to Apr. 29, students can get help and tutoring.
The primary aim of Conversations and Tutoring en Español is to create a welcoming environment for individuals to practice their Spanish. Students aren’t required to be currently enrolled in Spanish courses. You are free to go even if you simply wish to improve your language skills.
“It started as a conversation space for anyone to practice their Spanish, whether they were taking classes or just wanted to have a place to practice what they already know,” says Annette Zapata, Spanish professor and tutor.
Tutoring sessions are not solely beneficial for students grappling with new course material. “Tutoring is useful, not only for students that need help with the new material they are learning in class, but also to help put into practice the new grammar and vocabulary” states Zapata. Getting consistent practice can be the difference between being able to conversate with someone in the real world or not. The types of tutoring in these sessions include language retention, grammar and vocabulary practice, and pronunciation assistance. Additionally, the program provides exposure to various teaching styles and Spanish dialects. By working with different instructors, students can experience the rich diversity of the Spanish language, effectively broadening their perspective.
While tutoring is a critical component of the program, the tutors are equally committed to fostering a vibrant space for conversation. Conversations can be either guided or open, allowing attendees the freedom to explore topics of interest. The topics you can be tutored for or helped with don’t have to directly come from what you may be learning in class at that time. Whether academic or just wanting to be able to have a conversion in Spanish, the tutors will be there to assist in any way. This diverse range enables learners to engage in meaningful dialogue while practicing their Spanish skills.
“The most difficult part of language retention in second language learners and with heritage speakers is having a place where you can use the target language.” This insight captures the challenge faced by many learners in a city like Houston, where opportunities for Spanish use may be plentiful, yet intimidation or lack of confidence may hinder engagement. “Our goal is to create a nurturing space where anyone, regardless of their proficiency level, can come in and speak Spanish, ensuring that they remain active in their language practice” says Zapata.
Conversations and Tutoring en Español is open to the entire San Jacinto College community, regardless of their enrollment in Spanish classes. Meetings are conveniently located on the South Campus in building S13.157, occurring every Tuesday from 9:00-10:00 am and Wednesday from 12:00-1:00 pm until Apr. 29. By providing accessible tutoring and conversation practice, the tutors aid to break down language barriers and encourage participation among all students. “We aim to empower learners to embrace their Spanish language journey with enthusiasm and confidence” exclaimed Zapata.
The Conversations and Tutoring en Español program at San Jac is a resource for students seeking to enhance their Spanish skills. Through a combination of tutoring and conversational practice, tutors are committed to fostering a learning environment that supports language retention and promotes cultural exchange.
Through guided conversations or personalized tutoring, learners can navigate their Spanish language journey.
