Yesenia Medina, a Cosmetology major from San Jacinto College, says she had a great experience while completing the cosmetology and manicurist programs. She explains that both courses helped her grow and gave her a new perspective on hair and nails.
A lesson she will remember long after graduation is that “practice makes perfection,” she states true success comes from applying the skills learned in class. Yesenia plans to begin her career in cosmetology by renting a booth and building her clientele for a year before eventually opening her own establishment where she can offer multiple beauty services. She advises future graduates to stay dedicated and trust the process as they develop their craft.
Salma Edith Schmitt, a Cosmetology student from San Jacinto College’s South Campus, states her favorite experience at San Jac was connecting with inspiring mentors, classmates, and friends who supported her educational journey.
As a transfer and international student from Mexico, she especially appreciated the guidance of her mentors- Nakita Ramdhan, Rochelle Watson, and Cindy Celaya who helped make her time at San Jac memorable. The biggest lesson she will carry with her is that you can become anything you dream of, regardless of others’ expectations, as long as you believe in yourself and surround yourself with people who uplift you. After graduation, Salma plans to explore the nail tech field, open her own suite, and eventually give back by teaching mini workshops to future cosmetology students.
Clara R. Chapa, an Early Childhood Education major at San Jacinto College, successfully completed her degree entirely through online coursework, demonstrating strong self-discipline and time-management skills. Her favorite course was U.S. History with Professor Caresal Bolds, who’s engaging and meaningful lessons made online learning enjoyable.
Clara’s advisor, Abigail Villalta, also played an important role by guiding her with patience and helping her stay on track toward graduation. A lesson Clara will remember long after earning her degree is that it is never too late to start something new. She recalls feeling out of place when she first returned to school, but San Jac proved that learning has no age limit. She is especially grateful for TXAYEC for providing the scholarship that helped her complete her associate degree. After graduation, Clara plans to continue her education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Her advice to future graduates is to believe in themselves, ask questions, use the resources available, and never let fear or doubt stop them from pursuing their goals.
Amelia Esther Herrera, a Cosmetology major from San Jacinto College’s South Campus, says her favorite part of her San Jac experience was learning from Professor Nakita Ramdan, whose guidance made a strong impact on her education.
One lesson Amelia will carry with her long after graduation is the importance of staying organized in her studies. This is something that helped her succeed in her educational journey. After completing her coursework Amelia plans to return to San Jac to further her education. Her advice to future graduates is to never be afraid to ask questions, she states professors are there to help and support their learning.
