SJC Contribution to Biomanufactoring

SJC+Contribution+to+Biomanufactoring

San Jacinto College and the National Institute for Bioprocessing, Research, and Training
(NIBRT) have partnered to create a new Biomanufacturing program, which will be offered at
SJC-South Campus in August 2024. This program will be expanded to the Generation Park campus in
Spring 2025.
“We will be looking for students with the desire to work hard, pay attention to detail, follow instructions, and troubleshoot,” says Dr. Christopher Wild, Executive Director for the San Jacinto College Center for Biotechnology.
Biomanufacturing partners helped design the curriculum and students who graduate from this SJC program will be ready for hire from biomanufacturing companies.
“McCord Development, received feedback from biopharma companies discovering that the Houston region should look to NIBRT to partner with given they are the globally recognized leader in biomanufacturing training,” says Dr. Wild.

McCord Development made the newest Center for Biotechnology at San Jac Generation Park campus possible, further showing the levels of partnership and focus to grow the bioeconomy in the Houston region.
“NIBRT provides access to their 20 years’ experience in biomanufacturing training which includes: training curriculum, equipment lists, building/lab design, industry contacts, training for our faculty, regular meetings to discuss best practices, and much more,” says Dr. Wild.
SJC can lead biotechnology training which helps grow Houston-based
companies because while companies looking for new locations for biomanufacturing operations
can look to Houston as a possible home.
“With our new training programs, the region will now demonstrate that not only can we train
biomanufacturing professionals for the companies already in Houston, but we can also meet
future workforce needs,” says Dr. Wild.
“Leaders in the biomanufacturing industry, especially in cell and gene therapy manufacturing,
made very clear that a technical program that will train the future biomanufacturing workforce is
precisely what the region needs,” says Dr. Wild said.

The new program will meet the needs of major companies. Recruitment begins March 2024.

“Approximately two years ago, Amgen, one of the world’s largest biopharma companies, considered building a new manufacturing facility in Generation Park. At the time, there were no technical training programs in Houston that could fill the needs of Amgen. As a result, in part, they did not select Houston as their finalist, and they are presently building a manufacturing facility in another state,” says Dr. Wild.
