Rec Sports is currently gearing up for the Gulf Coast Community Colleges Consortium, a day in which colleges compete against each other. The GCCC event will have three-on-three basketball, four-on-four flag football, coed volleyball, and soccer competitions.
“We compete with other regional colleges like Lone Star, College of the Main Land, and Lee College. This event is on for November 4th, and any student from North, South, or Central just send me an email, and they can have a chance to participate. People joining will get a shirt and free lunch, represent the college on that day, meet other students, and create connections across the college. This event is competitive but is extremely fun,” says Scott Hortsman, Regional Director for GCCC and Professor of Physical Education, Rec Sports.
Participating in the GCCC Sports Day can lead to other fun activities.
“We have a lot of fun at this event rec sports attend festivals and events with giveaways and activities. In the past, we had an event with other organizations like Maritime, and played with the Propeller Club, cooked chili dogs, and played corn hole,” says Hortsman
Hortsman also encourages the use of SJCD weight rooms. The weight room is available for all students, staff, and faculty.
“All you need is a student or faculty ID to enter,” says Hortsman.
The weight rooms are available on three SJCD campuses.
“South and North both have weight rooms,” says Hortsman.
The Central Campus weight room is located in building 26.
“Through rec sports, we have a game room for dual credit or early college students 10:30 a.m. to noon for early college students. The weight room in C-26 Room 145 is open Monday -Thursday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., which has run-of-the-mill equipment,” says Hortsman.
Rec sports offers a variety of sports to choose from, but one sport is the most popular.
“Soccer is #1, volleyball and flag football are the top 3. The weight room is our biggest attendance because it is open daily. Rec sports day or the GCCC is the biggest event, and we only have it once a semester,” says Hortsman
In addition to the top three popular sports, the Rec Sports offers additional choices.
“We offer other games such as cornhole and various outdoor activities. The Game Room is a student service or engagement in the upstairs of the Student Center,” says Hortsman.
Student and faculty are welcome.
“The faculty are always able to participate or go to the weight room and are more than welcome to attend the events student services puts on student vs. faculty ping pong matches. It is something rec sports are looking into, and we are looking into. Pickleball is a hot item right now, and we are trying to see what we can do for that,” says Hortsman.
