U.S. Representative and civil rights icon John Lewis speaks at a rally for gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on Nov. 2, 2018. Black History Month Jeopardy! will quiz contestants on their knowledge of BHM leaders like Lewis.

February is a celebratory month full of glitter hearts and candy, but it is also a month to celebrate African-American culture and history. In commemoration of Black History Month (BHM), San Jacinto College is offering a full calendar of student events on the three main academic campuses.

On the Central Campus, Student Engagement and Activities (SEA) and Career Services are hosting a BHM-themed trivia game Feb. 26 as part of a leadership workshop. SEA Specialist Amanda Garza is co-hosting the event alongside Career Specialist Larissa Rios-Cruz.

“[The goal] is for students to come and learn a little history and leave with new knowledge on Black History Month leaders,” Garza said.

Part of the workshop structure features a “Jeopardy!” style trivia game where teams of participants compete against each other.

“This is the first time we have collaborated with Student Engagement and Activities for an event,” Rios-Cruz said. “I am most excited to see how students react to the format of the workshop.”

Moreover, she said she thinks the students will enjoy the contest because it focuses on BHM leaders they recognize. Rios-Cruz added, “And who is not excited about ‘Jeopardy!’?”

In addition to taking part in the BHM trivia match, attendees will participate in the leadership workshop discussion.

“I think students will like being engaged and being able to also share their thoughts on these leaders, what they have accomplished, and how it affects our society today,” Rios-Cruz said. “So, I am excited to see what the feedback is.”

Black History Month Jeopardy! takes place Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. in Room 218 of the Student Center (C14) on the Central Campus.
