‘Mary Poppins: The Broadway Musical’ continues to delight theater patrons of all ages decades after the release of Disney’s feature film. Audiences enjoyed an appearance by the iconic character during the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Nanny Mary Poppins is descending from the sky using her magical umbrella, but not on Broadway. While Disney prepares to debut the new Mary Poppins film later this year, the San Jacinto College Central Campus Department of Theatre and Film will present “Mary Poppins: The Broadway Musical” beginning Oct. 18 in Slocomb Auditorium.
Nina Saunders, theater director at Goose Creek Memorial High School, is the guest director of the College’s production of the award-winning Broadway show.
The musical is based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, featuring a magical-loving woman who descends from the sky in response to the Banks family’s advertisement for a nanny. While embarking on a series of magical adventures with Mary and friends, the children try to brighten the lives of their busy parents by adding some of Mary Poppins’ sunny attitude.
Phillip Morgan, director of fine arts at Goose Creek CISD said San Jac’s expertise, talent and trajectory make this presentation different from other productions.
“The SJCC Department of Theatre and Film provides an excellent opportunity for artists to grow in educational theatre and media settings,” Morgan said, “(There is) bountiful opportunity for show experience on and off stage with a superior faculty and staff to support learning and performance in the arts.”
“Mary Poppins: The Broadway Musical” runs Oct. 18-20 and Oct. 25-27 in the Slocomb Auditorium (C12) on the Central Campus. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. for Sunday matinees. Further information is available at the box office (281) 476-1828.
