Recreational (Rec) Sports kicked off their annual Toys for Tots drive on San Jacinto College Central Campus Nov. 6 and will continue accepting donations until Dec. 9.

Senior Administrative Assistant Mary Shelley said this is the fourth year Rec Sports sponsored the event that gathers toys on behalf of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for distribution to children from underprivileged homes.

“After we finish collecting everything,” Shelley said, “during mid-December, a bunch of Marines from the Marine Corps Reserves will box up all the donated toys and organize them.”

According to Shelley, the toys will go to applicants from the Galveston/S. Harris County Chapter of the Toys for Tots Program.

“We don’t know the exact area where our donations end up,” she said, “but sometimes we see stories on the news about the Toys for Tots distribution events in this area.”

Donated toys can be for boys or girls, as well as any size and any cost. In addition, monetary donations are accepted through the Toys for Tots website.

Although, a wide range of toys is welcome and encouraged, there are some restrictions. Shelley said the toys must be new, in their original packaging, and without any additional wrapping.

She added, “We can’t accept old toys because of health and liability issues.”

Donations can be dropped off in collection boxes set up in Anders Gymnasium (C18) on the Central Campus. Monetary donations can be made through the Toys for Tots website: Donate.toysfortots.org.
