Central Campus veteran’s center work study students, Jacob Eldridge (left) and Trey Seymour, know firsthand the many challenges of post-military service employment.

Coming home after years of serving in the military, many veterans encounter difficulties while adjusting to civilian life. San Jacinto College veteran student Trey Seymour experienced one of those hardships, post-military employment, firsthand.

“When you get out of the military no one tells you how hard it is to get a job,” Seymour said. “I faced that harsh reality when the only jobs that I could find with my military experience were dead-end jobs I was overqualified for.”

To counter that challenge, the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success on the Central Campus is teaming up with the Career and Employment Office to host New Mission Live Veterans Event on Nov. 3.

The training seminar features employment expert and radio personality Todd Bermont, the author of “10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search,” who will coach students on selling their military skills to create attention-grabbing resumes.

Veteran Success Manager for the three San Jac campuses, Eugene Bernard, said this is the first time the Central Campus veteran’s center is organizing an event specifically geared toward workforce and economic development for veteran students.

“There is a huge disconnect when it comes to civilian life and military life,” Bernard said, “and a lot of the time you might have something on your resume, like ‘shot an AR-15,’ because that was your job in the military. But how do you translate that into something fit for a civilian job?”

Furthermore, Bernard said he hopes that the event will make it easier for veteran students to receive help based on their individual situation.

“Through this process we can get the students the assistance they need and start to prepare our career and employment offices to be equipped to handle these types of questions.”

Moreover, New Mission Live Veteran Event is open to all former military personnel and aims to ready local employment-seeking vets for the upcoming annual Hiring Red, White, and You! job fair taking place in the Houston area.

“This is going to not only prepare our veteran students, but also the veterans in our community since we are going to open this up for every veteran who can benefit from this,” Bernard said.

Meanwhile, Seymour said he would attend the event to share his support and offer others the benefit of his experience.

“The military gives you so much life experience that can be applied to a job,” he added. “It’s time for that to be recognized and put to use.”

New Mission Live Veteran Event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 3 in Room 102 of the Interactive Learning Center (C1) on the Central Campus. There is no charge for veterans to attend.
