Local advocacy group, The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, provides a board full of information to educate victims at their crisis center.

San Jacinto College North Campus will host speaker Thecia Jenkins from The Bridge Over Troubled Waters (TBOTW) Oct. 28 as part of a series of events contributing to Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Jenkins has worked with TBOTW, a victims’ advocacy group, for 18 years.

According to Jenkins, the organization offers a broad range of services including support groups, counseling, and legal advice. “The Bridge is a comprehensive crisis center for survivors of domestic and sexual violence,” she said.

Jenkins said the College has worked with TBOTW for 20 years. San Jac teamed up with the organization to provide education and resources to faculty, students, and staff.

Savannah Wiggins, an administrative assistant for the Office of Student Life on the North campus, helped organize the presentation and said she hopes the event will offer members of the San Jac community vital information.

“We hope to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence as well as provide students with the necessary resources when dealing with these types of situations,” Wiggins said.

Likewise, Jenkins said she wants to spotlight the issue of violence, but further noted the significance of early intervention, adding that her goal includes to “continue to raise awareness about domestic/sexual violence and most importantly, mobilize individuals and institutions to be involved in prevention.”

The Bridge Over Troubled Waters’ presentation, ‘Don’t Be Silenced, Say No to Domestic Violence,’ will take place Oct. 28 between noon and 1:30 p.m. in room 124 of the Interactive Learning Center (N2) on the North campus. More information about The Bridge is available at www.tbotw.org.
